An Inspiring Story of a Mother and Daughter
Irene Martin founded Retire-At-Home shortly after her father passed away. Against his wishes, he spent his final 6 months in an institution where he was very ill and eventually passed away. This frustrating experience brought the idea of Retire-At-Home to the forefront with the desire to give individuals the choice to stay home for as long as they wish.
A year later, on a December day, Irene’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and she was not expected to have more than 3 to 4 weeks left to live. Both mother and daughter wanted to be together at home to share as many memories as possible and for her mom to pass away in the comfort of her own home. Irene was determined to make her mom’s wishes come true. Within three days of the diagnosis, her mother’s house was completely prepared for her mom to come home, including oxygen and constant care that she needed. Irene’s own mother became her first client to receive 24-hour palliative care.
After 4 weeks…
Irene’s mother grew stronger and healthier. Doctors could not believe the progress she had made. And just two weeks after that, she no longer required the oxygen therapy and began walking on her own. Her mother kept calling Irene, ‘the miracle maker.’ She continued to live at home with a good quality of life for another 10 months until she peacefully passed away. She was convinced that she lived longer and happier because of her daughter’s commitment to make her wish come true.
Irene’s experience with her own mother was the most convincing fact for her that it is possible for anyone to live in their home until the end of their life.
