Winter weather has meant that for the most part, we’ve all been indoors for months. Now that warmer weather is starting to come around, it represents a great opportunity for seniors and their caregivers to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.
Getting outside grants tangible benefits for seniors. Absorbing sunlight generates Vitamin D, which contributes to healthy brains, bones, and muscle functions. The fresh air makes the body produce serotonin, a chemical that lightens your mood, and increases feelings of calm and wellbeing.
And with a little planning, caregiver and senior can do a variety of great activities together that can rejuvenate a senior – and give them a little more spring in their step! Here are just a few of the activities you can do this summer.
Play a game
Find a table in the park, or bring a blanket and set up a game of cards, checkers, or maybe chess. Bring some friends or family so that you get some social time as well as the cognitive benefit of playing games.
Go for a walk or hike
A nice walk or hike can reenergize spirits and lighten your mood. Take in the scenery and explore a little, maybe you’ll discover something you didn’t know about your area. Plus, re-connecting with nature has been shown to increase cognitive abilities and other health benefits.
Attend an outdoor event
There are a variety of events that occur once the warmer weather starts. It could be a sporting event, or maybe an outdoor market, or theatre production. There are an endless number of community events in the summer that can stimulate seniors, give them social time, and get them outside.
Fishing allows for time catching up with family and friends. It’s also great for seniors with low mobility, as you can cast a line from a dock, pier, or other location. It’s a relaxing way to socialize, and you could even bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while you’re waiting for a bite.
